Air Duct Cleaning, Wilmington NC and the Cape Fear Coast

Coastal humidity, salt air, and seasonal pollen build up inside HVAC ducts much faster here than in dry climates. We clean ducts, returns, registers, and the blower compartment so your system runs cleaner and your home breathes easier.

What's included

  • Inspection of supply ducts, return ducts, registers, and the blower compartment
  • Negative-pressure agitation through the trunk lines using rotating brushes and high-volume vacuum extraction
  • Cleaning of every supply register and return grille
  • Coil and blower-compartment cleaning where accessible
  • Optional anti-microbial treatment for systems with mold or mildew indicators
  • Photos of before and after, plus a written invoice

Why coastal NC homes need duct cleaning more often

Cape Fear humidity averages 75% year-round. That moisture, combined with salt air drawn in through normal ventilation, creates conditions where dust binds to duct walls and mold spores can take hold inside ductwork — especially in homes that run AC for most of the year.

We typically recommend a full air-duct cleaning every 3 to 5 years for a coastal NC home, plus an annual dryer vent service. Beach properties, short-term rentals, and homes with pets often warrant a shorter cycle.

Signs your ducts need cleaning

  • Visible dust on supply registers or near return grilles within days of dusting
  • Allergy or asthma symptoms that get worse when the AC kicks on
  • A musty smell when the system first starts up
  • Inconsistent airflow — some rooms cool well, others don't
  • Recent renovation, new pets, or a recent move-in
  • It's been over five years since the last duct cleaning

What air duct cleaning isn't

Worth being honest about what duct cleaning does NOT solve, so you don't pay for it expecting the wrong result:

  • It doesn't replace an undersized HVAC system. If your home is too hot or too cold, cleaning the ducts won't fix it. That's a sizing or equipment issue for an HVAC contractor.
  • It doesn't fix duct leaks. If your system is pulling humid air from a crawl space or attic through gaps in the ductwork, cleaning the ducts doesn't seal those gaps. Duct sealing is a separate service (an HVAC contractor handles it, not us).
  • It doesn't solve moisture problems originating elsewhere. A musty smell only in the laundry room or bathroom is usually a drain or appliance issue, not a duct issue. We won't sell you duct cleaning for that.
  • It doesn't permanently kill mold. If we find biological growth, we clean and treat it with an anti-microbial, but if the conditions that caused it (humidity, leaks) aren't addressed, it will come back.

Supply ducts vs. return ducts — what we clean

Supply ducts push conditioned air into rooms; return ducts pull room air back to the air handler. Both need cleaning during a full service. Supply ducts accumulate dust from outside infiltration and from the air handler itself. Return ducts accumulate everything the home's air is carrying — pollen, skin cells, pet dander, food particles. Most homeowners forget the returns exist; they're the bigger source of duct buildup in our experience.

When duct cleaning is and isn't worth it

  • Worth it: 3-5+ years since the last cleaning, allergy or asthma in the household, musty AC startup smell, recent move-in, recent renovation, visible dust on registers.
  • Skip for now: system installed under 3 years ago, no symptoms, no construction or pet changes — your next reasonable cleaning is still 2-3 years out.
